Vegetables and fruits help to support the healthy function of the thyroid gland, primarily because many of them contain antioxidants. Here’s an important point: Any food or supplement that contributes to the reduction of inflammation or free radicals in the body will to some extent contribute to the continued healthy functioning of the thyroid gland. This would include any nutrients that play a part in the detoxification process happening naturally in the body (as in through your liver). There are also herbs that play a role in this area as well such as Commiphora mukul, or guggul, and ashwaganda.

Studies have shown that guggul, in particular, and the properties contained therein help to stimulate thyroid hormone production. It also increases antioxidants in the liver. The active component in guggul is called gugglesterone. Extensive research has revealed that gugglesterones can naturally regulate a gene receptor known as farnesoid X receptor or FSX. FSX is responsible for regulating fat burning in the liver.

Bile flow is also controlled by the FSX. Gugglesterones play a role in improving the function of the FSX gene receptor helping it to pump bile efficiently. It also helps to clear bad cholesterol or LDL cholesterol. A build up of LDL can eventually lead to stroke. Guggul also helps to clear out triglycerides and toxins.

Guggulsterones have been used in India for thousand of years to assist weight loss. A fat burning nutrient can benefit thyroid function even if only indirectly. Conditions such as obesity or extreme weight gain can negatively affect the thyroid also. In light of this, guggul can be quite instrumental in improving overall health.

Ashwagandha has been instrumental in handling stress and rejuvenating the body. Studies have shown ashwaganda to directly improve thyroid hormone levels. It works as an antioxidant to reduce lipid peroxides that form within the liver. These lipid peroxides are associated with persons who are overweight. Other studies reveal Ashwagandha to assist in the maintaining of antioxidant functions even in high stress situations. Cortisol is released in response to stress. When there is an excess in cortisol and poor thyroid function it often leads to weight gain and even obesity if it goes unchecked. Ashwaganda not only increases antioxidant levels but also reduces the cortisol levels as well.

Some Dietary Concerns for Those with Thyroid Problems

Calcium Intake. If one is on synthetic thyroid hormone replacement therapy, calcium intake must be monitored. Calcium supplements can interfere with the body's ability to absorb any synthetic thyroid hormone such as levothyroxine. For the most part, the interference in calcium levels can occur when calcium supplements and synthetic thyroid hormone are taken simultaneously or close to the same time. Keeping a four-hour gap between the calcium supplementation and synthetic thyroid hormone is recommended to avoid interaction and interference.

Soy Intake and Hypothyroidism.

If you have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism, then more than likely one of the treatment measures is thyroid hormone replacement. A form of synthetic thyroid hormone will need to be taken regularly. There is no evidence to support that the consumption of soy or soy products will interfere with the body’s absorption of synthetic thyroid hormone.

However, it is recommended that you leave a four-hour gap between synthetic thyroid hormone replacement supplement and any products containing soy. Ideally, one should take thyroid hormone replacements on an empty stomach. This goes for just about any product that may impede the absorption of the synthetic thyroid hormone medication. These products may include not only calcium, but iron supplements, antacids that may contain magnesium or aluminum and even high-fiber foods as well.

Foods that Increase Thyroid Function

There really isn’t a specific diet for someone trying to increase thyroid function as in this case with persons who suffer from hypothyroidism.

It has been noted that a high fiber intake can interfere with the absorption of synthetic thyroid hormone. If you have hypothyroidism and you are taking synthetic thyroid hormones then you should be wary of that fact. There are other foods that can impede the balancing effect of synthetic hormone therapy. They include:

  • Walnuts
  • Soybean flour
  • Cottonseed meal
  • Vitamins or supplements that contain iron
  • Supplements that contain calcium
  • Antacids containing magnesium or aluminum
  • Various cholesterol-reducing medications

The best course of action to prevent interference with thyroid hormone replacement therapy is to avoid these products above or consume them at least 4 hours before or after thyroid medication.

Coconut Oil. A book was published awhile back stating that coconut oil can supply direct benefit to the thyroid gland. This is erroneous and is absolutely untrue. Those who suffer from an underactive thyroid or hypothyroidism cannot stimulate thyroid function through the consumption of coconut oil. In fact, research even suggests that coconut oil may have a negative effect on the thyroid glands. If you have signs or symptoms of hypothyroidism, thyroid hormone therapy is what is generally used and prescribed to maintain healthy levels of thyroid hormone.

Exercise and Thyroid Function

The thyroid is located on the front side of the neck. It wraps around the larynx or voice box and trachea or windpipe.

As organs go, the thyroid is only a small organ in size when compared to other organs in the body. Nevertheless, it has a very large function when compared to other endocrine glands. Proper function of this seemingly small-sized organ is important to overall health. The more you know about the thyroid the more conscious you can be about the health of your entire system. Thyroid dysfunction, in particular, affects your metabolism, the speed at which your body burns energy and makes proteins.

There are nutritional supplements and herbs that you can incorporate into your dietary plan to help you maintain a health functioning thyroid. This supplementation may allow you to reduce or even eliminate the need to rely on using medication to restore thyroid dysfunction. Alternative therapies such as homeopathic remedies point to ways that ensure healthy thyroid function. Exercise including yoga can also contribute to good thyroid function.

The human body is quite complex. The organs of our bodies are related to each other in a very intricate way. On the surface, it may appear that one body part has nothing to do with the other but that is simply not true. Our design is far more sophisticated than that. A problem in one part of the body can trigger problems in associated organs. Physicians are highly trained in how the body is connected and will always be able to offer you explanations as to how different organs are affected in certain ways. A number of symptoms can indicate that our bodies or organs are not functioning the way they are supposed to. However, there are things that we can do to reduce the onset of dysfunction, particularly thyroid dysfunction. The practice of a healthy diet and regular exercise will go a long way.

Various organs in our bodies require oxygen carried in blood cells. Exercises such as walking, light jogging, aerobics and even swimming can improve circulation thereby increasing the supply of blood throughout the body.

Yoga is being used by many not just as a form of physical exercise but also as a way to treat many physiological ailments including thyroid dysfunction. Yoga is a traditional physical and mental discipline with origins in India. It has been so effective that it has spread to many other cultures and has caught on in a large way in the western world.

Though there is a spirituality associated with yoga, the main goal is to improve overall mental and physical health. As thyroid dysfunction sufferers often have to deal with physical and emotional aspects of thyroid related problems, this form of exercise provides tend to be quite effective and satisfying for them. In fact, it provides great benefit whether you have thyroid problems or not.

Yoga exercises are not limited to postures only. There are also breathing exercises, meditation and even dietary practices. A very important part of the discipline is rooted in positive thinking which gives it a holistic effect. Breathing exercises promote oxygen supply, which supports the thyroid system. Selected yogic postures like the “lion posture”, the “shavasana” posture or the “all organ posture” are specifically designed to contribute to healthy thyroid function.

Though yoga and in general regular exercise may cure an underactive or overactive thyroid gland it will promote good thyroid function and overall health. Also the more you engage in regular exercise the better you will feel. Feeling good is not just physical but mental and there is a close relation between our physical and mental sides.

Strong mind, strong body.
